4U - 10U Gear Rental

This page and the information here are being developed and are currently incomplete. Please do not rely on this page for rental information. Email gear@middletonyouthhockey.com.

Do you have young athletes interested in playing ice hockey, but don't want to commit to buying all the expensive gear? Take advantage of our gear rental program aimed at our youngest skaters!

Gear Rental Ages

Our gear rental program strives to keep hockey affordable for our newest and youngest families while they "try out" hockey.

Gear rental is available for skaters younger than 10 years old, but the program is primarily meant for our Learn to Play and Cross-Ice families and brand-new Mite skaters.

Your skater will need their own equipment eventually, but our rental program lets you try hockey before investing in gear.

Rental Seasons

We have gear rental seasons for the main winter hockey season (fall to spring) and for the off-season hockey season (spring and summer).

Main Winter Season Dates: Late August through Early March

Summer Season Dates: Mid-March through Mid-August

If you plan to just keep your rental gear from one season into the next, we'll charge you the seasonal rental fee while just keeping your paid deposit (instead of returning it and charging it again).

Per-Season Pricing

The gear rental program has a $50 fee per player per season. Beyond the fee to rent, a deposit is required to ensure the gear is returned to MYH in a timely fashion.

6U - $0 fee and $150 deposit

8U - $50 fee and $150 deposit

10U - $100 fee and $200 deposit

Deposits will be refunded to you upon returning your rental gear to MYH. The rental fees allow us to replace, repair, or upgrade equipment as needed.

Gear Pick-up & Return Dates

You might not realize it, but our Gear Director job is a really big one. To make life manageable for our volunteers, we insist that families pick up and return their gear on limited, set dates at the beginning and end of our hockey seasons.

Our members will receive email notification for these opportunities.

Equipment Tips for Success

  • Young skaters can wear loose sweat pants over their shin pads and under their hockey pants to forgo hockey socks and special undershorts or a garter.
  • A long-sleeved shirt under the chest and elbow pads helps to prevent any rubbing or pinching.
  • Thinner socks allow kids' toes to move in their skates and may counterintuitively keep their toes warmer than really thick socks.
  • Clear "hockey sock" tape works the best for fabric, shin pads, and socks. The fabric hockey tape is tougher to tear and better for sticks, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I dress my hockey player?

How do I go about buying gear for my skater?

Here is a nice USA Hockey article about how to succeed with your first hockey gear purchases.

Does my skater need a stick with a curved blade, or is the generic straight-blade stick ok?

If you know which side your skater will hold their stick, that's the time to buy a stick with a curved blade. It will make a huge difference in their ability to control the puck and shoot.

How long does my skater's stick need to be?

Here's a nice, concise video on sizing your skater's hockey stick. Kids grow quickly, so be prepared to move to the next size and don't invest too much in hockey sticks before 8U Mite or 10U Squirt hockey. If you'd like to dive a little deeper into stick sizing, here's another good video.

Skate sizing is really weird! How do I fit my skater for hockey skates?

Here's a good skate-sizing video. Skates generally fit 1.5 to 2 shoe sizes smaller than your skater's shoes. No one knows why...

I'd like to buy my skater's helmet. How should it fit?

Yep, there's a video for helmets, too!
