Middleton Youth Hockey (MYH) is a volunteer-led, Tier-2 youth hockey club serving families in the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District.

We offer hockey programs for players ages 3–18, from their first time on skates through high school. Our programs include introductory, developmental, and competitive hockey, with an emphasis on giving players an appropriate challenge as they grow.

We believe youth hockey should be fun, challenging, and rewarding. Players should have opportunities to develop their skills, build confidence, compete, make friends, and learn to love the game.

Our club is powered by families and volunteers who share that goal.

We envision a thriving hockey community where players, families, coaches, and volunteers are connected by a shared love of the game.

Through positive experiences, player-centered development, and supportive coaching, every child should have the opportunity to build character, confidence, and a lifelong connection to hockey.

MYH programs are organized primarily by age and stage of development. Each level has different priorities, and our approach changes as players grow.

You can expect a progression that generally moves from:

Learning to skate → Learning to play → Building skills → Developing hockey sense → Competing and performing

That doesn't mean every player develops at the same pace. We want players to be challenged appropriately while continuing to build the skills, athleticism, confidence, and love of hockey that will serve them at the next level.

MYH exists because families in our community are willing to give their time.

Our coaches, team managers, board members, committee members, and other volunteers make it possible for hundreds of kids to play hockey each year.

You don't need to be a former hockey player to contribute. We need people who can coach, organize, communicate, help at the rink, support our programs, or simply lend a hand when needed.

For children ages 3–6, our 3-6 Learn to Play program is the easiest way to get started.

For new players ages 7–12, Jumpstart! and Hometown Hockey provide a low-pressure introduction to hockey without requiring a long-term commitment.

We also offer affordable gear rental for our youngest players to make getting started easier.

New to Youth Hockey?

Developmental hockey doesn't mean “non-competitive.” It means we believe development comes first.

Young players need time and repetition to learn skating, puck skills, shooting, passing, decision-making, and the many other skills that make up hockey. They also need opportunities to experiment, make mistakes, solve problems, and gradually take on more responsibility.

That's why our programs place significant emphasis on practice, skill development, small-area games, and quality coaching—not simply playing more games.

As players get older, practices become more complex, and competition becomes a larger part of the experience. The goal is to continually prepare players for whatever comes next, whether that's the next level of competitive hockey or simply a lifetime of enjoying the game.

Middleton Youth Hockey uses USA Hockey's American Development Model (ADM) and Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) principles as the foundation for our programming.

These frameworks help us consider what players need at each stage of development, rather than treating every age level like a smaller version of adult hockey.

In practice, that means we emphasize:

🏒 Hockey sense and decision-making, not just executing drills

🏒 Small-area games and activities that keep players involved

🏒 Age-appropriate competition and progressively greater responsibility

🏒 A healthy balance of practice, competition, and recovery

We also want coaches to have the support and resources they need to create good learning environments for players.

Our Hockey Development Committee helps study player development practices, support coaches, and continually improve how MYH delivers hockey.

MYH offers programs from Learn to Play through high school, with programming designed around the needs of each age group.

Learn to Play

For our youngest players who are learning to skate and discovering hockey.

6U & 8U

The foundation years. Players spend a lot of time skating, handling the puck, playing small-area games, and learning to enjoy the game.

10U

Players continue building fundamental skills while beginning to develop more hockey sense, athleticism, and game awareness.

12U

Players are ready for greater tactical complexity, more advanced skill development, and increased physical and mental challenges.

14U

Players continue developing their individual and team skills while preparing for the increasing demands of competitive hockey.

High School

MYH players have the opportunity to continue their hockey journey through our high-school-age programming. MYH offers our 18U program, but players may also continue on to Middleton High School's hockey program.
