6U Termites are for young players ready to take the next step beyond Learn to Play. Our focus is simple: help kids become confident skaters, learn basic hockey skills, make friends, and have fun.

Birth Years: 2020 & 2021 (experienced 2022 skaters are welcome and must be four before the season begins)

Skill Level: inexperienced skaters welcome; Learn to Play or similar introductory skating experience encouraged

Season: mid-October through late February

Season Fee: $300 for the full season; payment plan available; $150 option for either half of the season

Jersey: reversible practice/game jersey required; $45

MYH offers rental equipment for our youngest players. Players need full hockey equipment, including skates, helmet with cage, shoulder and elbow pads, gloves, hockey pants, shin guards, neck protector, athletic cup/pelvic protector, and stick.

One of the benefits of our split-season structure is that players can move into Termites when they're ready.

A child who begins the season in Learn to Play may develop enough skating confidence to join the Termites for the second half of the season.

If you're unsure whether your player is ready, please reach out to the Learn to Play or Termite Age Level Director. We're happy to help you find the right fit.

Players begin the season together as an age-level group rather than immediately splitting into teams. This gives coaches time to work with all players, helps kids get to know different teammates, and keeps the early season focused on individual development.

Teams are formed shortly before games begin in early December, with development and participation in mind. 6U coaches and the ALD will split kids and coaches into teams and then communicate the remainder of the season's game schedule. We'll be waiting until then for the Dane County League to release the game schedule, too.

Termites play small-area games against other local teams, primarily in Dane County.

Games give players opportunities to skate, handle the puck, make decisions, and experience competition in an age-appropriate environment.

The emphasis is on learning and participation—not winning.

Young players learn best when they're doing, not waiting.

That's why our 6U practices use stations, small-area games, and lots of movement instead of long lines and standing around.

Do players need to know how to skate?

While our 6U program is designed for beginners, we recommend that all 6U skaters have taken at least one 8-10-week Learn to Play season before the 6U season starts.

Many players are learning to play hockey for the first time, and our coaches create a fun, supportive environment where kids develop at their own pace. Doing a Learn to Play program before 6U hockey starts ensures our coaches can spend more time on hockey and less time picking kids up from falling.

What does a typical practice look like?

Practices are fast-paced and fun, with lots of skating, small games, puck touches, and age-appropriate activities that keep players moving and engaged.

What equipment does my child need?

Players need full USA Hockey-approved equipment, including a helmet with cage, skates, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, hockey pants, shin guards, neck guard, athletic cup/pelvic protector, stick, and jersey.

MYH has a great gear rental program for our youngest skaters!

Do 6U teams play games?

Yes! Termites participate in cross-ice games that maximize puck touches, skating, and involvement for every child. The focus is on learning and having fun rather than winning. We travel for games, but not too far (Dane County).

Can my Learn to Play skater graduate up to 6U Termites for the second half of the season?

Absolutely!

This is one of the reasons we offer a split-season option. A player who develops enough confidence and skating ability during the first half of the year may be ready to join Termites for the second half.

My 6U player is really good. Can she/he bump up to 8U Mites?

Generally, we do not bump players up. We want kids to build confidence - not raise the bar as soon as they're getting somewhere. Skaters must register for their designated age level. In limited, exceptional circumstances, families may request that a skater be considered for placement in a higher age level. Please see the MYH Player Movement application for details.

How can I help my Termite have a great season?

The most important thing you can do is keep hockey fun.

Celebrate effort. Cheer for improvement. Let your player make mistakes.

Ask questions like:

“Did you have fun?”

“What did you learn?”

“What was your favorite part?”

How can I help make 6U hockey awesome?

Our youngest hockey players need lots of adults helping behind the scenes.

You can coach, help with games, volunteer at events, help with equipment, or simply welcome a new hockey family.

You don't need to be a hockey expert to make a difference. Learn about volunteering!

Does MYH offer girls' teams at the 6U level?

When we get lucky with our skater numbers, MYH has offered a girls' 6U team in the past. We want small teams so kids get lots of repetitions in games and practices. If our registration numbers look like they could work out, we'll ask families if they'd like their girl skater to be on a girls' team. Our girls' families are the most effective recruiters for girls' hockey. Please tell your friends!
