12U Peewees Overview

Peewees, for 11- and 12-year-olds, is an important window for hockey development. The game becomes faster and more physical, while players begin to take on more responsibility for their skills, decisions, and development. USA Hockey continues to emphasize that practices—not games—should be the primary driver of player growth.

Did You Know?

To consistently make smart hockey decisions, 12U players need developed skating, puck-handling, and hockey sense—not just systems or set plays. That's why we continue to prioritize individual skill development alongside team concepts at the Peewee level.

Beginning of the Season & Development Assessment

Our season begins in late August with an optional CARDS Camp, giving players a chance to get back on the ice while allowing families flexibility around fall activities. Participation is not required.

Beginning September 15, 12U players come together as an age-level group for a week of practice before development assessments. This gives players time to get comfortable on the ice, continue developing their skills, and provides flexibility for fall schedule conflicts and multi-sport athletes.

Development assessments begin around September 24, with teams formed by approximately October 5. We intentionally keep players together as a group for as long as possible, giving coaches the opportunity to work with all players, build community, support multi-sport athletes, and focus on individual development before teams are formed.

Learn more about the MYH Development Assessment process.

Tournaments

Four tournament fees are included in your 12U registration fee.

If your team decides to participate in additional tournaments, those entry fees will be paid by player families. Families are also responsible for hotel and transportation costs.

Girls' 12U Hockey

At the Peewee level, Middleton Youth Hockey provides girls the choice to play co-ed hockey with MYH or join an area girls-only team.

Volunteering

Middleton Youth Hockey is volunteer-run. Each 8U family is required to volunteer 7 hours for a single-skater family or 12 hours for a multi-skater family.

The volunteer deposit is $200 for one skater and $400 for two or more skaters. The deposit is returned when the required hours are completed.

We're always looking for coaches, managers, game volunteers, event helpers, board members, and others who want to help improve MYH.

Seven Ways You Can Make Peewees Great!

  1. Focus on growth, not comparisons.
  2. Support commitment and accountability.
  3. Model respect for teammates, opponents, officials, and the game.
  4. Encourage resilience through adversity.
  5. Trust the coaches and avoid coaching from the stands.
  6. Help your player maintain balance and enjoy hockey.
  7. Coach or volunteer!

A final word for 12U Families

12U is a special stage in a player's hockey journey. The game is getting faster and more physical, players are developing their hockey sense, and they're beginning to take greater ownership of their development.

This is also a time when players can develop at very different rates. Some will emerge quickly, while others may need more time and repetition. That's okay. Development isn't linear, and it isn't a race.

Our job is to give every player a positive environment, quality practice, meaningful competition, and the support they need to keep getting better.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is 12U different from 10U?

12U builds on the skills developed at younger ages while introducing faster, more physical hockey and more advanced team play. Players continue refining their skating and hockey sense while learning to compete confidently, responsibly, and with increasing independence.

How are teams formed?

Players participate in development assessments before teams are formed. The goal is to create teams that provide an appropriate level of challenge, meaningful competition, and a positive environment for continued player development.

How do players learn competitive contact?

Body contact is introduced progressively through age-appropriate instruction during practices. Coaches teach players how to give and receive contact safely, maintain body control, and use proper positioning.

What does a typical 12U practice look like?

Our 12U practices emphasize skating, puck skills, small-area games, hockey sense, body-contact skills, decision-making, and team concepts.

We believe practices are where players improve most, so they remain the foundation of our 12U program.

Is winning the primary focus at 12U?

Players are expected to compete hard and strive to win, but development remains our priority.

We measure success by how much players improve individually, support their teammates, and compete with effort, resilience, and sportsmanship.
